Integrating SCORM packages into Open edX Studio involves a few best practices to ensure a smooth and effective implementation:
-
Understand SCORM Compatibility: Before integrating SCORM packages, ensure that they are SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 compliant. This compatibility ensures that the content will work seamlessly with the Open edX platform.
-
Use LMS Agnostic SCORM Packages: Whenever possible, use SCORM packages that are designed to be LMS (Learning Management System) agnostic. This means they are built to work with a variety of LMS platforms, including Open edX.
-
Upload SCORM Packages to Open edX Studio:
- Log in to Open edX Studio as an administrator or course author.
- Create or edit a course within Studio.
- Use the "Advanced" component to add an "External Learning Tool"
- component.
- Choose the SCORM .zip package you want to upload.
- If the SCORM content does not have any quizzes, set “Scored” to False.
- If the “Scored” parameter is True, you must specify the weight of the quizzes’ points.
- SCORM content best practise:
- To ensure the best experience for learners it is recommend that you keep your SCORM packages small. (1MB - 15MB) A larger package has a longer load time and can cause a bad learner experience.
-
Following the rule of 1 SCORM component per unit, it is recommended that you break your content up into unit sized chunks. This will help maintain the smaller package size.
-
Try to limit the SCORM package to 1 quiz or scored component.
-
Testing and Troubleshooting: Thoroughly test the SCORM package within the Open edX environment to ensure it functions as expected. Address any issues that arise during testing.
-
Communication: Clearly communicate to course instructors and learners how to access and interact with the SCORM content within the course. Provide instructions on launching the SCORM package and any necessary prerequisites.
-
Regular Updates: Keep the SCORM content up to date and ensure that it remains compatible with any Open edX updates or changes.
By following these best practices, you can effectively integrate SCORM packages into Open edX Studio, providing a seamless learning experience for your users.
Note:
-
Only 1 SCORM component per Unit may be used.
-
The SCORM component will be displayed under the Unit title in the LMS.
-
The Display Name is only used within Studio.
