Setting Up a Certificate in Open edX Platform
Configure and Issue Course Certificates Using Open edX Studio
Introduction
Certificates allow learners to receive official recognition after successfully completing a course. In the Open edX platform, certificates are automatically generated when a learner achieves the required passing score in a course.
Course teams can configure certificates directly in Open edX Studio, including adding signatories and customizing certificate information. This guide explains how to publish a course for certificate eligibility and configure certificates so they can be issued to learners.
Tip:
Before setting up certificates, ensure that:
-
You have Staff and Course Creator access to the course certificate
-
You have course team permissions in Open edX Studio
-
The course has already been created and published in the Open edX studio
Publish a Course in WooCommerce
The course is first imported to the Discovery Admin, and then it's published to WooCommerce with a specific payment mode (Honor, Audit, No ID Professional) in order to enable the certificate in Open edX Studio.
To publish a course in WooCommerce:
- Login to Edly panel via panel.edly.io using the specific account name.
- Make sure that you have set up at least one graded assessment in the course, and that the grading configuration is updated as per the certificate prerequisites defined by your organization.
- From the Edly panel top navigation menu, redirect to Discovery Admin.

- Then, you need to hover on the Courses option on the left navigation bar, then click on Add New Course.

- Then, you need to select the course from a section on the right side, on top of the side bar, under the heading of Edly Course Import From Studio.

- Click on the Publish button.
- Click Add new product on top of the page as shown in the screenshot below

- You need to write down the name of the course for which you want to create a certificate.

- Then you need to select the course that you have created. To do that, please scroll down until you find a section named Product data.

- As shown in the above-given screenshot, you need to check the box beside Open edX Course. Then, you need to select the course that you created, from the drop-down menu.
- Then, in the drop-down menu beside the Open edX Course Mode title, you will find three options as shown in the screenshot below:

- For certificate generation without payments, use the Honor option.
- To let the learners pass, but without a certificate, please select the Audit option.
- For certificate generation with a payment gateway, select No ID Professional.

- After you click the No ID Professional option, the Regular price text box will be enabled, and you can write the cost of certification.
- Once you set up all the necessary information on this page, then you need to click on the Publish button.

- When a learner enrolls in a course, an email is sent to them from our end, which may also consist of a product image that you can add from the same page, as shown below:

Setup a Certificate in Open edX Studio
Now that the course has been published and certificate has been enabled in E-commerce site, you can complete the certificate creation process in the Open edX Studio.
To setup a certificate in the Open edX Studio:
- Go to the Open edX Studio from the Edly panel.
- Select the concerned course from your Studio dashboard.
- Navigate to the Certificates from the course Settings from the top-navigation bar as shown below:

- Add a signatory for each person associated with the course or organization whose name and title you want to appear on the certificate. You must specify at least one signatory. You can add as many signatories as needed.
Note: It is recommended that you include four or fewer signatories. If you include additional signatories, preview the certificate in Print View to ensure the certificate will print correctly on one page.
- In Signatory, enter the name of this signatory as it should appear on certificates, signatory title and the organization that this signatory belongs to.

- For certificates, upload an image file showing the signature of each signatory.
Note: The image file must be a transparent .png file, 450px by 150px.
- When you have finished adding certificate details, select Create.

- You can preview the certificate to see how it will appear to a learner taking the course in the selected mode.
Note: A course team member with either the Staff or Admin role can preview the certificate.

- To begin issuing course certificates, a course team member with either the Staff or Admin role selects Activate.
Note: Course certificate is not available for issuing to learners until it is activated.
